The Board of Trade report attributes ■the Dfttton accident to the driver's insufficient knowledge of that section of the lino and the misleading signals. The -enginew as insufficiently manried. The fire was caused by the use of gas. The Board of Trade recommends that companies tiso electricity. . (On September 17th, a shocking railvraj accident occurred at Widnes, where the Chester-Liverpool express -was de-l-ailed. The engine failed to tabs the points on a stoep incline, and dashed into the masonry of the bridge spanning the line. The carriages dashed into the stat'm and collided . with th« platform. The first two were reduced to matchwood, and the third and fourth wrecked. They Immediately., caught fire. An appalling scene ensued. The huge heap of debris was soon in flames, and the imprisoned passengers, screaming in agony, were slowly roasteS to death.)
