Mr. J. H. Howitt, C.E., of the engineer's staff, WeKffig&e-n, waa last night appointed #engineer to the Timaru Borough Council, from 22 applicants. The. salary is £400 a. year. \ Mr Thomas Bamber, our esteemed townsman, celebrated the 82nd anniversary of his^birthday yesterday. "With his many friends, we wish him "Many happy returns of the day." A very interesting event took place in Dustin's rooms yesterday afternoon, when the whole of the- members of the family of Mr and Mrs William Davis (five sons and four daughters) met to celebrate the golden wedding of their parents, Avho are well-known and highly respected residents of Waverley. The family gathering included Mr and Mrs W. Davis, senr., MrW. J. Davis (Waverley), Mrs J. W. Hughes (Maxwell), Mr Arthur Davis (Pukearuhe), Mrs W. Dickie (Waverley), Mr T. Davis (Marton). Mr Walter Davis (Okau), Mr Charles Davis (Waverley), and Miss Mabel Davis (Waverley). The old couple, who are still hale and hearty, were the l-ecipients of many congratulations. With the breaking up of the schools, many of the teachers left for their homes yesterday. Among those who went away for the holidays was Miss O'Brien, headmistress of St. John's infants' school. Miss O'Brien has lately been unwell, so she is availing herself of tho long summer vacation to visit Australia.
The many friends, of Mr W. Swanger, Seci-ctary of the Board of Education, will be pleased to learn that -he has quite recovered from his recent severe indisposition.
