PRESENTATION TO REV. BRO. BASIL

Last evening a social function was tendered-to the Rev. Bro. Basil at Mrs Carroll's tea rooms by "the Old Boys of the Marist Bros.' School, on the occasion of his departure from Wanganui. The duties of chirman were very ably carried out by Mr T. Lloyd. '

Tho following contributed to the musical part of the programme jJMessrs G. Gronin, W. Briggs, L. oiottus, T. Grotty, J. MoCulloch, J. Welsh, C. G. McCarthy, the Rev. W. S. Mahoney, and the Rev. Bro. Fidelis.

The following was the toast list: — "The/tope and the King," "The Rev. Bro:.•Basil," Other .Brothers, Clergy, present Boys, and Chairman, and Hostess. '■ „

The accompaniments were rendered in a very canable manner by the Misses 'Mack (2). " ", ' .. Mrs iCarroll'.s catering, as usual, was of the very best.

. The -following address was read by Mr J. Welsh, after which the presentation wao made by Mr J. D. itoche. To Rev. Brother Basil, Princioal of the Marist Brothers' School, Wanganyi.

: Rev. dear Brother.—We, the old boys of the Marist Brothers' School, Wanganui, have learned with regret of your approaching departure from our midist. You are one of that band of n<#>le men., of the religions orders of the Catholic •Church, who' have, devoted their lives to the education of youth and in Wanffatiui Almighty God has crowned your efforts- with marked; success. .During tbo.|ix years you have been head of the Marist Brothers' School here, you have by your isntiring energy' and ability rjrised the school to a leading position a-fnonorst the educational establishments of our town: a fact which is evidenced by tho large number of your pupils who have passed,, in many cases with honour, the various examinations for which you have prepared them. The value of the intellectual training which we have received from you stands high, lmfof far greater'worth is that higher 'lesson which you have taught -us .by the example of your own virtuous life.' Durinn: your ntay in Wancranui- you have overtaken an active and'intelligent interest in tho welfare; of the pupils entrusted to : your care, and by your kindly disposition you have endeared yourself to us all. As a small token of oup estoem nnd gratitude we 'beg you to accost the accompanying nrespiit, nncl hi bidding you farewell -we pray that Almighty God may in His me rev grant you -many more 'years of health and strength to Labour in tho noble cause to which you have devoted your life.
