H.M.S. TORCH.
THE COMMANDER'S VERSION
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Nov. 8
Commander Le Hunte Ward, of H.H.S. Torch, interviewed regarding the statements cabled concerning the vessel, said that when the Torch was posted to tho ire-serve at Sydney, five or six years ago, it was generally understood that she was to be turned into a hulk. These responsible postponed the overhauling of the vessel from year to year. This was winked at by the official eye, with the result that when instructions were cabled for the Torch to be reK;o-m----missioned to replace the Pegasus in the Friendly Islands, there was consternation in the New South Wales naval oirole. The Torch was certainly docked, but there was only time for a hurried adjustment of the machinery •and to effect repairs absolutely necessary. At the beginning of last year the Torch loft Sydney and proceeded tc the islands. All wont well -until Meaning the end of the 1700-mile tour, when the propeller shaft snapped. She was towed to Sydney by H.M.S. Psyche. This necessitated a full report of tho vessel's condition, and as a result an inquiry as to be held concerning the condition, of tho vessel when she put to sea from Sydney. Commander Ward is oi the opinion that the inquiry will be held in Australia. The vessel has now hscn thoroughly overhauled.
