I "I have strained my heart, and could not attend the drills/ was the excuse given by a young man named Lawrence Gronn to Mr W. Kerr, 5.M. 3 .at the Court to-day, for not having attended the necessary parades required by the Defence, Act. Two charges were preferred against him. Tv reply to the Bench, defendant stated that be hid been attended by Dr. Scott, but had not obtained a medical certificate. Tt v.as shown that defendant had been given -every opportunity by the Defence authorities to procure a medical certificate concerning his alleged weak heart, hut the necessary document was Jiot forthcoming. Gronn did not efctend tho- parades, and the Department had no flLteniiative but to proceed against him. A fine of as., with casts 7k.. was imposed in each case by the Magistrate. I who impressed upon tlte defendant I the seriousness of the offemco. The thine could not be allowed to continue, and if there was a recurrence a severe penalty would be inflicted.
