comio opera "FLoradora" and the writer, of many popular songs, said that before he began writing operas he earned £10 & week composing church music and songs. The operas he had written in the last thirteen years had yielded £40,000. His successful songs, including "Soldiers of the Queen," had proved lucrative, but the royalties disappeared, because when they became popular they were pirated.
