Ormond in 1903, is a brown horse standing 16.2 hands, by Birkenhead—Soltalre, by imported Eiridspord from Solitude, by Robinson Crusoe. He was a high-class performer. As a two-year-old he was successful in the Napier Stakes, of 250 soys., 5 furlongs. As a three-year-old he won the King Edward Handicap, of 200 soys., nine furlongs, at Hastings, in the spring beating a big field. In the Canterbury Derby, of 1000 soys., he defeated six others comfortably. In the Great Northern Derby, of 750 *soys., he beat his three opponents pointless. That he was a brilliant sprinter as well as a good stayer he demonstrated ,in the Royal Stakes of 500 soys., at Ellerslie, by carrying 9.2 and running six furlongs in lmin. 15 4-sth sees. As a four-year-old he was at the top of the tree. In the Jubilee Cup, of 600 soys., he beat Elevation at level weights in the fast time of lmin. 41 3-sth sec. His next success was in the Auckland 4Jup, of 1750 soys., two miles, in which he carried 8.4 and beat a big field. He also pulled off the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, of 750 soys., carrying 9.3, in 2min. 36 2-sth sec. At weight for age he had no difficulty in winning the Auckland Plate, V 2 mile. In the Great Autumn Handicap, of 1000 soys., he carried 9.3 and beat Signor (6.13) and others, in 2min. 40 3-sth sec. He won £CSOO in stakes. During six seasons the progeny of Eirkenhead have won in stakes in the Dominion over £50,000. They have also been successful in the Commonwealth, both on the flat and over fences.
