HOUSTON UNDER LOCK AND

(Per Press Association.) WHANGAREI, Oct. 31. Houston, the escaped prisoner, was recaptured by Detective Hollisand Constable Douglas this afternoon on the foreshore sixteen"miles from Whangarei. The capture was cleverly effected, Houston falling into: the trap laid. He had previously been seen on the opposite side of the harbour. Information was given to the police, who followed the clue, but avoided revealing themselves, fearing that the escapee would take to the dense bush, where hs could easily conceal himself. Tho police crossed the harbour, knowingHouston was in tho vicinity. A con- , federate was bribed to croSs the 'harbourj m a boat, land Houston eventually appeared, and accepted the boatman's offer to ferry him across. On disenibark- ; ing ho was promptly pounced upon by ) Detective Hollis and Constable Douglas. Houston admitted that his recapture was smart work, adding that in the course of his long dareer he had broken gaol 12 times. Sergeant Moore proceeded in ;n special launch to Mai-sdeit Point. On arrival at Whangarei, a, ■ largo crowd gathered on the wharf to catch a glimpse of Houston. This was anticipated by Se.rgt. Moore, who brought the launch up a side creek and : took the prisoner by a back way to j the cells. Houston appeared very weak I and footsore, eliciting" the sympathy of ! onlookers by his dejected appearance. , Elaborate precautiorais are being taken jto keep him in custody. Tho police I are reticent, but state that a guard has been posted. -
