WHY SEAMEN ARE SCARCE

LONDON, October 24

Speaking aba national conference on eea training to-day, Lord Devonport, chairman of the Port of London Authority, said that the British mercantile marine required an influx of 5000 boys annually through approved training ships. He pointed out that the decrease in the number of British seamen now employed was. attributable to the relative disadvantages of the sea compared, with employment ashore. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Lloyd George, wrote expressing sympathy with the object of the conference, and promising to consider the question of providing monetary assistance towards its accomplishment.
