AUCKLAND STREET FATALITY.

AUCKLAND. October 29
An inquest was opened before the Coroner (Mr. Gresham) at the Coroner's Court this morning, touching the death of John Bollard, aged 38, quarryman, who was struck by a motor-car and thrown beneath a tratnear while crossing Khyber Pass Road at about 10 o'clock on Saturday night. F. J. Briggs, labourer, stated that deceased boarded at his hnuse. Frequently ho would abstain for a month or two. and then so out for a Satiirday night spree. When he last saw him ho showed no signs of drink. In adjourning tho proceedings until Wednesday next, the Coroner said: "In view of what we have elicited from the first witness to tho effect that the man was probably the worse for drink at tho time of receiving the injuries which resulted in his death. I may tell tha jury distinctly that the responsibility for running over him is in no way affected. The law distinctly requires that eveu a paralytic or a drunkard is to be protected in that resneet.".
