PURSUIT AND CAPTURE OF AN ESCAPEE.
(Per Press Association.) WH&NGAREI, Oct. 28. A man named/ Huston, who escaped from the Hiku^rangi police station on Thursday, was Recaptured by Constable Armstrong assisted by a civilian named Williams, at o'clock 'last night between Tamarere and Opua. It was elicited that Hnston .had purchased a fishing line and hooks from a store at Kawahawa previous to which he had stolen camerjtem' jfcoolSj which were found in his possession. The owner is unknown. It was his intention to get aboard a boat as ship's carpenter. The first clue to his whereabouts was obtained from his calling at a gumdigger's hut at Hukerunui after leaving Kawakawa. He lit a fire in <a brick kiln, hastily decamping when he was observed by (three young men, who communicated with the police. He was overtaken near the seaboard and submitted without resistance. - He will be brought to Whangarei to-day, and charged to-morrow with burglary and theft of tools, and breaking gaol. A peculiar coincidence, which led to the police being in the vicinity, was that an immigrant answering to precisely tho same description was being traced, but was able to satisfy the police who went to arrest him at Motatau. Huston has followed the main road from Hikurangi to Opua, dodging into the 6ide scrub to avoid passing detection. He travelled nearly 40 miles before he was recaptured.
