(By our Travelling Reporter.)
MARTON, Oct. 2o
While a good many people at Marton were preparing for bed last night, a sensational accident occurred at the new storage resrevoir recently constructed by Mr R. McG-avin, of Hastings, on account of the Marton Borough "Council, at Upper Tutaenui, at a point about five miles from Marton township. The «ensation consisted of the bursting of the new dam, resulting in the releasing of about 30 million gallons of water, and involving the borough •ratepayers in the loss of over £1000. SWEPT TO DESTRUCTION.
The front portion of the reservoir, composed of ferro-conerete, and formation works, and -about 30 feet of pipes and pipe track, 'we're- carried ftigh't away and swept to destruction.
-There is also a large crack on the top of the embankment extending nearly the whole length of the dam. Some people seem to think that the bank had not subsided to a firm .foundation before the "wails were strong enough to hold the water turned in, the pressure of n weight of 3&,000,000 gallons being sojnething enormous.
