WAIHI, Oct. 25
The number of men working underground at the Waihi mine now numbers 68. The ore sent up to the crushing Inrjll now exceeds (four hundred tons per day. Each day fresh hands ■are being employed.
FEDERATION IN A SERIOUS
STATE
AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. Messrs Webb and Semple, representing the executive of the Federation of Labour, arrived .at Huntly this morning. They were met by a crowd .at the railway station.
Mr Somple, in a speecl^ admitted the extreme gravity of the situation generally, but hoped an honourable settlement would be arrived at. In the meantime, the Federation was being unjustly assailed by the employers and the workers, and an action for heavy damages for libel was being taken against the Federation by those concerned in the efforts to form*"scab" unions. The seriousness of the position was the Federation executive's excuse for not meeting the men sooner, but ho assured them that they had no fear of meeting them. He and Mr Webb would meet the miners' executive in a conference to-day, when a report of their deliberations would be given to a meeting to-morrow. He felt sure that the men would almit an honest endeavour was being nyido to settle the trouble in an honourable way. At the conclusion of his speech, Mr Semple was cheered.
THE REVOLVER INCIDENT
WAIHI, Oct. 2,3. A man named Robert Manning was arrested yesterday for .assault arising out of tho revolver incident in /tho train at Paeroa on Monday last. He appeared at Court this morning, and was remanded to appear at the Paeroa Court on the 30th inst.
