A DOG FIGHT.

OWNERS BEFORE THE COURT.
A NOVEL PROSECUTION
(By our Travelling Reporter.) MABTON, Oct. 24. A novel case of, its kind in these parts was heard to-day at Feilding, and the result should show owners of dogs that it is against the law to allow them to fight. Two defendants were before- the Court, namely, Edward Jackman and William Christie; they were each charged with having allowed their respective dogs to fight. Both defendants put in a plea of not gupilty. According to tho evidence given, tho dogs were fighting, and Cockroft tried to stop them, whereupon he was told by Jackman not to interfere. Miller tried to separate the dogs, and got a hit from Jackman. Constable Kelly stated that he had seen the dogs fighting, and Jackman and Christie were not trying to separate them until he came" up. Christie said tho dogs wanted to fight, and he let them have a go. Jackman said Christie thought he had the best dog, and therefore they let them fight. Sergeant Bowde.n 'iSttftod .that ,Jackman had informed him the dogs started fighting about a sandwich insido the hotel, and,he took them outside. They .started fighting again. Christie had said his dog was better. Jackman. on oath, said the- dogs had been fighting in the passage, and he had carried his dog out by the back door. Later, they commenced fighting again. Men started to kick thorn, and he stopped that cruelty, and separated the clogs as fioon as he could. Ho (admitted that Christie had said he thought lie (Christie) had the better dog. Christie also gave evidence to the effect that he itned to |pinvent the dogs frpm lighting. The Magistrate said he could not help thinking neither of tho accused was very desirous of preventing the fight. A fine of 10s., with 15s. costs, was imposed in each case.
