RANGITIKEI NOTES.

DR. BARNARDO'S HOMES

AN ANTI-MILITARIST

FINE OF £3 IMPOSED AT FEILDING.

TONGUE OF MARTON FIRE BELL MISSING. A GRANDFATHER SUED FOR MAINTENANCE. CIVIL CASES AT MARTON. SMASHING UP A MOTOR CAR. COLLISION AT NIGHT. (From our own Correspondent.)

MARTON, Oct. 24. Mr F. B. Glasgow, lion, treasurer of Dr Barnardo's Homes Fund at Feilding, has been handed the sum of £oO 18s 3d which has been collected locally. A lad named Stanley Tunuicliffet, aged 16 years, was to-day fined £3 with costs 7s.*, at Folding, for having failed to attend drill. In reply to the Bench the defendant said that he did not intend to take the oath or attend drill. Tunniciifle said that he would not pay the fine. The tongue of the fire-bell opposite the Marton Sash and Door factory fell on to the footpath some days ago, and it still lies there. If a fire occurred in the neighbourhood at night, the residents would have a poor chance of be--ing made aware of the fact. The matter certainly requires immediate s^m/antion, for the bell is perfectly useless at present. In /thd case Greenwood v. Green* wood heard at last Marton Court, the plaintiff having made an application to the Court for an order on the defendant for the maintenac© of his grandchildren, Mr Kerr, S.M., gave judgment to-day and dismissed the case, each party to pay their own costs. A disputed butcher's account occupied the attention of Marton Court to-day, when Henry T. Manning (Mr. Ladley), sued W. Sinclair, of Masterton, for £6 15s Id for meat supplied. Defendant disputed part of the claim, and alleged that the account w::.s accurate. Miss Bishop, accountant for plaintiff, maintained that Mrs Sinclair had admitted the claim, and had said that she would pay before leaving Marton. Judgment was pven -,;■>,■ ;. •* plaintiff for the amount claimed, with costs £1 16s. At the Marton Magistrate's Court to-day, judgment for plamt.-tf b.-.- default was given in the following ca*es: Perham Larsen and Co. v. R. J. Carter (Palmerston North), £5 17s and costs £1 6s; A. J. Sutcliffe (Marton) v. Frank Adams (Marton). claim 16s 7d, costs os; Fullerton. Smith, Miles | and Cook v. C. W. Lamzstone (Taihape) claim £7 6s Bd, costs £1 3s 6d; A. J. \ Sutcliffe (Marton). v. A. Neilsen (Marton), claim 12s 4d, costs 6s; Dr S E. Crawford (Marton) v. William Collier and wife (Terrace End), claim £8 11s for professional services. A couple of months ago, when Mr. J. G ; Blackwell, of Marton. was motoring in a Ford car with several passengers to Marton Junct'in Jvs f"v "^ ' a fish cart collided. The car capsized, and was considerably damaged. At , the Marton Court yesterday he sued the owner of the 'fisli cart for £94 lls lid. damages sustained by the car, medical services, rendered t"o on© of the injured passengers, loss of the use of the ear from Sept. sth to Sept. 30 (£35), board of injured man for week, etc. The plaintiff alleged that he was not travelling at a greater speed than 15 miles an hour; that the" fish cart was without lights. The case was adjourned until nexifc Court day, after three witnesses had been examined. The sale of work in aid of the Prov byterian 'Mission took place at St. Andrew's Hall. Marton. yesterday, and rfpsnite the inclemency of the weather, those concerned had bren r-v^cd to such a condition of enthusiasm that the gross takings amounted to r'W IRp which was considerably_moro than last year, when fino w^'^r T- evn ;! a ~,. the garden party. Before the company dispersed the Rev A. Porter thanked all for rendering such valuable assistance, particularly the Maori girl performers from . Turakina College, and the Marton Junction B^iv) '•> h hnd given them such a delightful programme.
