Mr E. D. Hoben, late proprietor of the Manawatu "Daily Times," has been J appointed the editor of the Ohristchuroh " Evening News." Yesterday morning a private cable message was received by Messrs Gould Beaumont and Co., of Christchurch. conveying intelligence of the sudden death in London of Mr Joseph Gould, who is well known in business circles in Christchurch, and formerly a member of the firm. The Wanganui friends of Mr Henry J. R. Tilley, formerly manager of Jqhnston and Company's, Ltd., Wanganui branch, will regret to hear of his death at Marlborough on Monday. Mr Tilley, who was a nephew of the Hon. C. Jl Johnston, was for teome *time manager of Clouston and Company's, Blenheim, and latterly followed farming pursuits. Mr James .Ferguson,- who has been appointed manager of the Bank of New i Zealand at Patea, was presented with a purse of sovereigns by the residents of Greymouth before he left that town for Patea. Mr Ferguson is an old servant of the bank, having^ filled the position of manager at Westport, Reefton, and Greymouth, and previously was on the old Colonial Bank staff. Tho funeral of the late Mr W, W. McCardle, Mayor of Pahiatua, took place yesterday afternoon, being very largely attended by both town and country residents, despite the showery weather. The cortege, which was a very representative and lengthy one, was headed by the Pahiatua Brass Band, playing the "Dead March" in "Saul." Borough Councillors^ and the borough staff, Fire Brigade, and members of various institution's and local bodies to which the late Mayor belonged were well represented. Many premises were draped, and all shops closed for two hours to enable business people to attend.
