SOME BOWLING FEATS
Tho greatest number of wickets obtained by a bowler in succession is eight. Tho feat has been accomplished twice —as far back as ISB2, by James Walker for Ashcombe Park against Tunshtall, at Ashcombo Park, near Lock, Staffordshire, and in 1902_ oy Jp.mo-s Stebbing for Frendsbury against Rainham, in Kent. Tho feat of taking all ten wickets in a match has been performed on many occasions, but Australians have figured rarely in them. Those on record arc: —E. Barratt, Players v. Australians, at tho Oval. 1878; George Gitten, tho Australian Eleven v. Rest of Australia, at Sydney, in the season 1883 —-1 ; and W. P. Howe!!. Australians v. Surrey, at tho Oval, 189!).
Dr. W. G. Grace, playing for M.C.C. and ground against the Oxford University, in 1886. took all ten wickets in on innings, and into the bargain scored 104.
A;istral-p.ns hnv? r.lso fi^urcl in mntchos in which seventeen wickets have been taken by ono bowler r.s. follow:—C. T. B. Turner, Australians v. an Knglnnd Eleven, at Hasting-; in 1888; and W. Mead, for Essex acrninsfc the Australians, at Loyton, in ISfH. In a small match in Australia in 1881, F. R. SpofForth bowled down all ton wickets of his opponents in each innings.
Sv> far as remarkable analyses go, perhaps the mest notable is thai of Q. Elliott, who, in the match between Victoria and Tasmania, at Launce-ston in 1857-8 season, took nine wickets for two runs.
Thorn havo been some remarkable analyses at one period of >an innings, one of the most notable being that of tho veteran, W. G. Grace, who, playing for Gloucestershire against iNotts, at Cheltenham, in 1877, took seven wickets for no runs. He finally finished up with eight wickets for 34 runs. Mold also took seven wickets for no runs for Lancashire against Somerset, in Manchester, in 1894, and finished up with seven for 10, while J. W. King, wko, in 1911. for Leicestershire against Yorkshire, finished up with eight wiclceta for 17 runs.
For the* first Australian team—that of 1878 —Spofforth obtained the enormous number of 764 wickets at a, cost of 6.08 runs each, taking 281 during tho preliminary colonial tour, 326 m England. 69 in America and Canada, and 88 during the final colonial tour.
