THE HARBOUR BILL
I DKOPPED FOR THE YEAR (By Telegraph.) (Special to "Chronicle.") WELLINGTON, Oct. 23. The Local Bills Committee to-daj reported recommending that the Wanganui Harbour Bill be not allowed to proceed, as the Standing Orders had not been complied with. Mr Veitch expressed disappointment ! that the Bill had been again lost this | year, but he quite recognised that the j report was a fair one, because it was a fact that the Standing Orders had not been complied with. Thus the progress of the port must be put off for ! another year, and it would now be five or six years before they got a deep-sea port at Wanganui. ■ Mr Pearce (chairman of the conimitI tee) said the committee were favourable to getting the Bill through this year, 1 and the Standing Orders had been suspended to allow a No. 2 Bill to be introduced, on the understanding thatcertain districts should be cut out. There were, however, still mistakes made in regard to •the boundaries., and theHarbour Board itself objected that the; town only should pay the rates. Thepeople of Wanganui had a right to put their objections before the committee.
