A firo occurred at Glen .-Oroua* last aiighi between seven and eight o'clock, resulting in the total destruction of an eighth-roomed house occupied by Mr. Percy Carter and owned by Mr, W. H. Duncan, of Feiilding. None of the family wero at home at the time of. the occurrence, and by the time Mrs. Carter reached the burning buiilding she was only ablo to save a few clothes. A defective chimney is regarded as the cau.se of the fire. The house was insured for £300 in the Commercial Union.

As mentioned in the "Chronicle" a oouplo of weeks ago. all arrangement* h'U-e Keen eomTVleted. as the result of Mr. D. H. Guthirie's representations, for rural mail delivery in the Haletfmbe, Stanway. Tokorangi and Mount Stewart districts. The mail is to;'be taken on - wiotor-cycle, buF delay is occasioned by the dilatorin-ess of settlers in providing.,postal' boxes.

At. the Quarterly .meeting of the Sandon And Rongotea Methodist Church, the retxvrt. presented showed iliat thY membership of tho church was 103 full members and 15 junior, the ■-highest «inco Foildin"1 was separated from the circuit ton years aero. There was a debit of £2 iOs. on the ouarjer'fi working. Tt was decided that letters of sympathy he forwarded to Mrs. B. S. Penny ami the .family; of the late Mrs. Whisker. Mr. T. Spcakitif at tho Farni.ers' Union dinner at Mr.rton last niglit, Mr. Morrison (Tokorancri) said that th^ union liad done good work, and 'were always on tho alert. Th.o small farmer had groatly benefited by the insurance scheme. Flo was pleased to notice the marked improvement at each ploughing .match, and Mart on was a groat centre for or>couraging tho young funvors in their work. At tho same tinic he regretted that the young men did not take tlio interest in tbo*e- nloughing contests that th^v should. Tt was certainly nc-coss?vi'y-for the development of the ■country for tliom to display iiiorn activity.

bal! last night The fanners of the d!.-4--Vt hnyo 1...^. lv invonlcd r>, most valuablo device for draining iuid aerating tlio a->]\, whic'y tlu-v (MfHlw as a subsoil and soildraiiKM", by means of Avlii^-li a drain of" n»u' dn^ired diameter may -bo drilled aloii!r. beneath tho surface of end: in'rmv turned by the nil on eh, nnd at nnv dr-sired dopth.
