MARTON NOTES.

DEATH OF AX OLD SETTLE!!

CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW

(Snecial to "Chronicle.") MARTON, May 17

A very old reddemb of Rangitikei in Mr Charles Blackwell passed away at his residence, Mart on, last night. Deceased was seventy years of age. He was an old Maori War veteran^ and took part in the Padhaka, expedition. He has been a great sufferer lately. A widow, married daughter (Mrs J. B. Barrington) land son (Mr J. G. Blackwell), are ileft to mourn their loss.

Tho Mtirton Chrysanthemum Show was opened this afternoon under auspkcous circumstances, the show of this favourite flower being very fine. The blooms would have done credit to any metropolitan show, but Mr James Gibson, of Upper Tutaenui, simply "scooped the pool," his contributions to tho show carrying off first honours in every class. In order to offer every opportunity to chrysanthemum growers, the date of the show was altered, and it was found yesterday to have affected tho other, part of the exhibition' very considerably, thers being no entries of cactus dahlias-. Though the entries oh the whole are fewer this year,- the quality lias improved, and generally speaking* the Show is; a great credit to tho town, and affords ample demonstration of 'the capabilities of the district. There were some fine exhibits of vegetables, but owing to lack.of accommodation they AVere not shown off to advantage. Patrons were treated to the sight of a, few carrots, ■■ cabbages, etd, just inside the entrance door, and then in the main haill other exhibits" were to be found. If Iconsetit rated v the «x----hibitbn would have been a jsplendid one; in fact, authorities state that* the vegetable class this year .proved -ii record in every redirect• Homeindustvieisr' were weak. Tiie officials Avorked hard, and are desorvin<j of praise for the completeness of the ai'ranjjements.
