Hart, a third class steward, said he warned the steerage passengers of the clangor. . Stewards were placed at various points to dairect the way to the boat deck. Many women who went were afraid to enter the boats, and returned to their quarters, (thinking they wouild be safer aboard. All the women and children could have reached the boats if they had wished.
