ATTITUDE OF LABOUR,

AUCKLAND, May 12. Consulted upon the question of thethreatened establishment of Chinese cabinet-making factories in New Zealand, the secretary of the Auckland' bi-anch of the Federated FurnitureIrades Industrial Association of Workers said his union had been taking ac--tivo steps in a quiet way for about a month past in connection with, thematter. Ohristchuroh, where it was rumoured that a start would be made by the CMnese, was tho first to more,, ■and had communicated with other centres. The result'was that the furnitureworkers right throughout New Zealand were now prepared to take united action. The Auckland Union had passed a resolution guaranteeing support to the Ohristchurch Employers' Association and Ohrifttchurch -workers, and most of the Auckland employee had already bc-?n approached. Everyone who had been seen had signed a guarantee to support tho southern protest against the thrautemxl Asiatic invasion. At a, mooting of tho Auckland Furniture Workers' Union, the secretary was instructed to write to all unions an the city asking for their support in theproscnt movement, and emphasising V-n necessity for the workers to see "that tho class of goods they bought were of European manufacture. He was alsoin.structod to get in touch with the local members of Parliament, and to take every means of ensuring safety to- - European workers in this matter. Special instruction was given to the h«c----i-etary to impress on wicker-workers theimportance of supporting this /vof,:t.T\ n« the Chinese wero past masters at tins form of industry, and as a natural consequence would foliow up this industry if they got a start among the-cabinet-makers. A special committe?., including among its members men with Australian experience, was set up to ensure continuity of action between the union meetings in connection with the movement that has been started against th-a threatened Asiatic competition.
