AUCKLAND, April 12. At tho Police Court, Thomas Dwyer wp.s charged with having betted in a public place, viz., a billiard room.
Counsel for the defendant stated that his client kept a motor garage at Masterton and v,as hero on a visit and had ir> intention of carrying on his business as ? bookmaker.
Mr Eraser. S.M.. said as it did not appear that the defendant was carrying on systematic bookmaking for a long time bo might inflict a minimum penalty, and imposed a fine of £20 and costs on one charge, and recorded convictions in two other charges on condition that tho defendant kept ck\ir of betting altogether, which condition the defendant agreed to.
A further charge against tho defendant of having been one of those arrested in connection with tho recent raid was also taken by request. He had a betting book on him when arrested, and a fine of £1 and costs was inflicted.
