A SERIOUS RIOT.

LONDON, April 8
Serious rioting occurred at Pendlebury in consequence of an attempt to cart coal. An.excited crowd of strikers overturned lorries and appropriated the coal. Thousands then invaded the pithead and stoned 150 police from behind a wall. The police made numerous baton charges on the strikers. Many heads were broken, and a number of the strikers'"taken home on'stretchers. There were nine .arrests.
Many meetings in Yorkshire commend the leaders for ordering resumption until the minimum is fixed.
Keir Tlardie, at Doncaster, said the refusal of the miners to return to work was suicidal. The miners were going to compel society to take over the mines. The next demand would be a fixed yearly'salary.. . . ,
The Amalgamated Raihvaymen refused the 'North-Eastern Company's bonus of £60,000 sterling to the lowerpaid workers in order that the disputed claim for increased wages should remain in'abeyance until the termination of the existing award. . .•'..-',
