POLITICAL.

(By Telegraph.) .(Special to "Chronicle.")

WELLINGTON,, January 25

The impression seems to. bcv gaining ground that if Mr; • Massey- is given, the opportunity of. forming "a Ministry., he will be able-to-carry on for the lull term of the Parliament, and that: another general election, either within the, year or at the end of three years, would certainly increasa his majority.. ; Even the "Post" seems to have come to the conclusion that he should be given a fair chance, for in concluding its principal leading article to-night, it says:—"lt is at any rate clear that there is no stich question of principle at stake as should prevent Mr. Massey from receiving at least a qualified support during good behaviour from a section of the Liberal Party strong enough to balance the representatives of Labour arid Independent Liberalism. On the other hand, a strong reason why he should receive such a support is to bo found in the natural reluctance of all members to force a dissolution, a reluctance which is with good reason strongest on the side of the Liberals. That party is very seriously discredited and disorganised. It is speculating on a change oZ loader, but it does not know where to turn to find a substitute for the present one. A dissolution would assuredly land the 'Liberals in : a far worse position than they occupy at present. To stand and wait is the best -service they qan cause, at present. ~ With, reasonable .manage-, ment, Mf:' Massey .shotilcT tlerefbre have a good chance of playing out the three years, and,-' whatever • -he does, we are satisfied; that.the .change will /be beneficial. The Liberals' monopoly ~of power , ,has lasted, far, too long to be 'wiiblesoihe and we hope that the performance may never be repeated." J-Vivv.i.";)~ •'■•' :' •' '
