GONVILLE PRIZE-GIVING
Thero was a largo attendance at the Gonvillo Town Hall on Tuesday evening, when the presentation of prizes in connection with the Gonvillq School took place. Mr F. Webb-Jones (chairman of tho Gonvillo School Committee) presided, and tho prizes were presented by Mr W. A. Veitch, M.P. Prior to tho distribution, soveral of the items rendered at tho concert given in aid of tho prizo fund last week were repeated, and heartily applauded. In calling upon Mr Veitch to present tho prizes, the chairman, on behalf of the Committee and tho friends present, extended the "heartiest of congratulations to the new member for Wanganui, and said he felt certain Mr Veitch would ever be found ready to assist the Committee in any applications they might have to make for additions to the school building. Mr Veitch,'who met wit«h a very hearty and enthusiastic greeting, thanked tho chairman for his kind remarks, and said it afforded him very great pleasure to attend tho interesting ceremony, which was quito a relief alter the strenuous campaign ho had recently successfully emerged from. Ho was pleased to note tho marked progress of* Gonville. Only about three years ago tho school had started as a- GO-school, and it had grown to such an extent that he had been given /to understand nthaf the Committee expected that when the school assembled after tho vacation thero would be a roll number of about 300. That would necessitate further additions to tho school, and ho would bo pleased if one of his ..first official duties was to^assist in securing a grant from the Department for tho purpose. The speaker then congratulated the prize-takers on the position they had achieved, 'and spoke some kindly words of encouragement to tho r;on prize-winners. Ho said it was quite n'child's mistake to assume- that because it did not secure a prize one year, thercforo it was.no uso trying the next year. 1A little reverso would do them good, i provided they mado up their minds to do better, and ho urged tho non prizetakers to mako a special effort next time. It was also a mistake., said Mr Veitch, to think that tho securing of ; prizes was simply a matter of intelliI genco and that tho awards went to tho i cleverest children in tho classes. The p.nmo principle applied life aa applied in school; success in life was fa matter of work rather than of brain power, and the secret of success was | thereforo not tho possession of brain i power or keen intelligence, but the application of the intelligence each possessed.
