CORRESPONDENCE.

KIDCWAY STREET

(To the Editor.)

Sir.—Re proposal to lease frontages between Museum Road and the Liblary. It was pleasing to see that the Mayor took the view that this required careful consideration by the Borough Council before taking: off a portion from tho Queen's Park Reserre. The prevent slope is no more than is required for stability, so that the full depth of building lots would require to come off the flat at the top, unless part of the height was supported by a retaining -wall. This means serious encroachment on the reserve above where the beautifying work has been in progress. The present slope is well turfed and protectod and if the large trees were icmoved and shrubs planted it would be ornamental. Tho view from the edge of the flat above is a fine one, looking f-ver to the river and Durie Hill. It won't be improved when the back premisses of proposed building leases show in the foreground. Let anyone go to i the top between our Museum and Ridgvay Street and view -the back premises from the Museum road to the Rutland, ftnd he will not wish this aspect repeatej between the, Museum road and the Library to be seen from one of our fay- I r urito and most accessible reserves. Should not the Council prevent encroachments on o\;r reserves and breathiug spaces and instead of reducing them, rather open up new ones in the areas they are cutting up and leasing in cI.-jso settlement? Tf the present proposal be gone on with it will form a dangerous precedent. There is the open space in front of the Drill Hall to-be jealously preserved, also the frontages cf Coot's Gardens'-in. St. Hill Street, and other reserves well known. Surely our authorities who are the guardianN in trust for our future citizens should to uso an old expression "think twice" over this matter. —1 am, etc., CITIZEN
