Hooper OVanganui) have been appointed enumerators for the ?ollection in their districts of agricultural and pastoral statistics under the Agricultural Department. The death is announced at Hokltiir i of .Mrs E. Barton, mother of Mr Wn. Barton, S.M., of Gisborne, and of Mr C. A. Barton, Clerk, of the Court at WangamnV The deceased lady had beoii a resident of Hokitika for the past 45 years. A wedding of much interest to footballers was celebrated in. the Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church, Wellington; last Monday afternoon by the Rev. J K. Eliott. The contracting parties were Mr W. J. Wallace, the jvell-knoyn " Ail Black" footballer, and Miss Jessie Mowatt, of Thompson Street. Mr F. Brace was best man, and Miss Mo watt (sister of tho bride) bridesmaid. The honeymoon is being spentgin Wanganui. Tho death occurred at New Plymouth on Thursday of Mrs Smith, wife of Mr S Percy-Smith, ex-Surveyor-General. Mrs Smith was a 'daughter of the late Mr W. Morgan Crompton, who was an old settler of New 'Plymouth, and who always took a prominent part in the political life of the district in the early days, and was Speaker "of the Provincial Council for a number of years. Mrs Smith came out to New Zealand with her-mother in 18533 Mr Crompton having arrived here three years previously. She was married to Mr S. Percy-Smith "in 1803.. A gentleman widely known and esteemed in Otago and Southland passed away in Invercargill yesterday morning (says a press wire) in the person oi Mr Alexander Herdman. Mr Herdman had been in poor health a considerable time and death was not unexpected by tJio members of tins family. The deceased was born in Edinburgh in 1840. Mr Herdman is survived 15y his widow and family of three sons and one daughter. Tho sons are Messrs A. Tj. Herdman, M.P., J. G. Herdman (manager for Dalgety and Co., Napier) and F. W. G. Herdman (manager for Dalgety and Co., Hamilton). The. daughter is Miss Herdman, a nurse in the Invercargill Hospital. • There died at Seaward Bush on Wednesday afternoon John Stapleton, who was born in Tipperary in 1811. It was not until 1883 (at the ago of 73) that lie" decided to emigrate, leaving. Jiis naf iivo land in the sailing, shin Trevelean. Ho landed at Port Chalmers towards tho end of the year 1883, and arrived in Southland on New Year's Day, 1884. Most of tho time since then ho spent in tho Seaward Bush district. Always a labourer, Mr Stapleton was a very active man in his day, and till a few years ago enjoyed excellent health." Of late, his age weighed on him, and for the last nine months be was compelled [to take to his bed. Mr Stapleton, whose wife predeceased him 40 years, is sur- ! vived by a son and daughter and 14 grand-children. The death occurred at Greymouth yesterday afternoon ,of Mrs Kilgour, relict of the late "William.Kilgour. Deceased had been in indifferent health for some time past, and an operation was performed a few days ago, but deceased gradually sank, the end coming peacefully. The late Mrs Kilgour, who had attained tho age of 75, was married at Williamstowu (Victoria) to William Kilgour, and of the issue there were eight sons and two daughters. The sons are William (in business in Sydney), Henry (engineer), Arthur (manager of Singer's, Blenheim), Frederick (manager of tho "Grey Evening Star"), Edward (engineer at Wanganui), Alfred (stationer ; t Greymouth), Claude (telegraphist" at i Greymouth). One daughter is matron j of the Kumara Hospital.
