There were 450 guests present, the Karl of Carrington presiding Viscount Hnldniie, in a speech, said the Empire owed a great deal in connerrtion with the Imperial' Conference to the vicissitudes of party government, making prominent new aspects of Imp rial affairs. The preference controversy set people thinking about alternatives. The Hon. A. Fisher, replying, asked why Britain should not reach sin inviting hand to other enlightened nations, particularly America, who .would co-operate so that they might say to those wishing to disturb the peace of tht> world, "You shall not do it." Ho welcomed Viscount Haldane'3 suggestion' that the Conference might -be held aivay from London, and added ihat a little might bo learned from Australia, oinep the Colonies were more familiar with Britain than Britain with the Colonies. Sir Joseoh "Ward also responded.
