SYDNEY, March 20
A well-known Sydney, merchant, i\vho; has arrived from Ponape, states that tho lato rebellion there was quickly crushed. A German punitive expedition, imnibsring 800, attacked the rebels' i>osition in the mountains,--which was stormed: Many rebels were killed, 60 surrendered, and the rest were, hunted like wild beasts till only 16 of the principal murderers were left. Fina'jy they surrendered. The two leaders, who were shot first, addressed the i atives, and de-dared that they, were fools to revolt against the Germans,, who treated them well. They advised their friends to obey the law. The other 14 were afterwards shot, facing death laughing and joking. Several huiidred natives were deported to the "Western Carolines* . . -..■■.
