A number of telegrams, congratulatory and'"otherwise wore forwarded to the Hnwko's Bay cricketers during the progress of tho Auckland match. The

When the northerners had topped the SOO for the loss of only four wir-ke'ts jin urgent was despatched,' '"Please don't Ist t-heim make more than 1000." To a member of bh-a tourist's team who got "a paiir," this was .sient— "Strongly rcc-ommend' you consult Barry, optician. ■ —Quack quack." New that it i:> definitely, settled that the English eleven cannot come to New Zealand next season, why should not a New Zealand eleven visit Aiistralia early in the season ? (says a Christchwrch writer). If tlie New Zealanders arrived a few weeks ahead of the Englishman, keen interest Mould hs taken, as Australian players would ba kean to play against New Zealand in view of tho other big matches to follow. It is 10 years since the last team went to Australia, and as there is a revival here of public intcivst in thei game, there should bo no difficulty in sending the team across. Judging by tha play against the Australian team last season in New Zealand, our prospects are bright indeed io make a decent g.ime with tho various States. A' team which would bo picked from Reese. Luisk Homus, Sale, Sims, Broske-Smith, Sandman, Bennett, Findlay, Midlane, MacUVi!? 110; , Boxshall Anthony, Hadden, Oiitf, Blackiock, Siedeberg, Torrance and Eckhold would be o. fairly stranoteam even for Australia
The New South Wales Association-has voted 20gns. for the purchase of a souvenir to bo presented to Victor Trumper in recognition of his success as captain of JNew South Wales in regaininc the Sheffield Shield, and of his great per ' forrnance with the bat in the "third tent match at Adelaide. This recognition has been most thoroughly Victor Trumper started this"~season m a new role as captain of a side that needed lebuildang. At first he was not as happy in gtnVling the reins as could have been desired. But he quickly got f>. grip of the side-, and his leadership in tlie match with Victoria was as skilful as anything seen in inter-State cricket toi- many a day. The attempt'made by Hawke's Bay agamsfc Auckland was Very feeble, and their effort of 23 bsars comparison with Auckland's 13 against -' Canterbury m 18/8, Wellmjrton's 22 against Cantorbury in 1904.
