PIGGOTT BEFORE THE COURT.*

Piggott was charged at the policecourt with falsely pretending to the* secretary of the Rifle Association that he had scored 49 points at the 1000 .yards range for the King's Prize, whereby he obtained £100, with intent to defraud. After being proclaimed: winner and chaired, Piggott - received the £100; but afterwards returned the money to the Association.
The arresting constable produced Piggott'a written statement wherein he confessed that he did not shoot at the 1000 yards range. -He declared that he was sitting behind a mound, when an unknown man asked to see his shooting card. He marked in the score, and him to hand it in as it would he all right. Piggott also alleged that lie made a bet with the man to whom he handed the filkd-in card, of two pounds to nothing that he would win the King's Prize. afterwards wro^e -bo the Secretary of the Association asking him to keeip the matter out of the papers for the sake of the innocent ones at home. *
A witness deposed that lie met Big•gott'by arrangement after Piggott had told him he had won fairly and squarely, and he agreed to attend the1 inquiry and give evidence in support of Pig-< gott's claim that, he had made the score. .
The casfs was adjourned for a week to allow the defending counsel time to consider, what course to adopt.
