Prescient 'fa-ft had an important interview with- Mr Sherman, who declared that he Tiacl no intention of withdrawing from the chairmanship in Mr Roosevelt's favour and promised that the New York. Convention platform .would strongly approve President Ta'ft's administration. Senator Sherman/urged President Tali to write a letter early for publication and sound the keynote of the Congressional campaign, especially upholding the Payne tariff. He pleaded for an old-fashion-ed Republican campaign on old-fash-ioned lines. It is understood that Pipsident Taft promised, but will frame iv letter in accordance with his own judgiiisnt. It, is understoodl Senator; Sherman and President Taft agreed that it was impossible that Senator Ci.nnon could be re-elected to the Speakership.
Progressive Republicans are vigorously working- for the control of the New York -Ixmvehrfcion, in-, .order to secure Mr Roosevelt's chairmanship. Mr Roo3evelt has arranged a strenuous -speech-making tour, starting on the 27th.
