THE FISCAL QUESTION
SIR W. LAURIER ON FREETRADE
(United Press Association. —Copyright.) Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. OTTAWA, August 13.
Sir W. Laurier, addressing 10,000 people in Alberta, said: You are all freetraders. I also am. Fox, Gladstone, Bright, and Cobden are my models, hut a young country cannot adopt freetrade the same as England, which derives revenue from the luxuries of the leisured classes, for which it would be impossible to tax new settlers. The bulk of the finances must at present bo raised by Customs duties." Sir Wilfrid promised revision of the tariff. He expected that reciprocal trade with tho United States would be speedily established. United States was knocking at Canada's door, but, until now, Washington had made no fair proposal.
