UPPER WANGAEHU ROAD DOARD.
The Board met on Saturday last at Mataroa. Present —Misses H. Collier (•chairman), J. Brenner, G. Goodrick, J. Biaclley, and P. Pederson. A memo was received from Messrs J. Garmonsway, J. Reardon, and J. White., asking that steps be taken to have their thirds hypothecated to pay special rates on their sections in connection with the Rangiwaea Loan.— To bo voted when submitting proposals for expenditure on acrued thirds. A petition, signed, by fifteen settlers in tho Rangiwaea and Raketepauma Blocks, was presented to the Board by Messrs W. Strachan and J. Garmonswav, asking that the Government grant of "£SOO for Hales' Road" be spent on that road only, and that efforts be made to open a track right through from the Turakina Valley road to join the present formed track on Hales' road. At present it is impossible to ride to Wanganui or to.any placo on Hales" road without trespassing 011 private property.
In connection with the same matter, plans and specifications of Hales' road extension from Turakina Valley road to tho end of the present formed track on Hales' read-, were forwarded by Messrs Dix and Marchant, engineers. The specifications provided for two contracts, No. 1 from Valley road to Kaimahangi road to end of present formation of Hales' road, •a. total distance of 3 miiles 77 chains. It was decided that Messrs Dix and Marchant bo requested to complete all plans, specifications, etc., required by tho Public Works Department for its approval, and that if approved tenders be invited for contracts No. 1 and 2 as submitted by the engineers. Tho members appointed reported that they had 'inspected the formation and bridge on the Koukopo road and passed same, and that, therefore, the payment in aid thereof promised by the Board was due.
A resolution was passed—''That all f.urfaoemen at present employed by the Board be discharged.1' It was resolved that steps be taken to notify the Board's intention to make and levy a general rate of one penny in the £ on the capital value over the whole district.
It was carried, on the motion of the Chairraan, seconded by Mr Bremner—
"That the Clerk be instructed to send out tpecial rate notices demanding payment within 14 days, such notice to mmchide ratepayers in the portion of the district now known as the Mangamahu Koad District, and that portion of the old Upper AY'angaehu lioad District now incorporated in the Waimarino County." The Board then went into Commitlea to consider appliscations for tlio position oi clerk and treasurer: also for that of working foreman. On resuming ths Chairman reported that ten applications had been received for the position of clerk and treasurer. It Mas recommended that Mr H. J. Doher by, of Taihape, be appointed at a salary of £65 per annum, including the IISQ °J his office. For the position of working foreman fourteen applications
had been received, and it was recommended that the matter of appointment to this position bo held over till next meeting of the Board. Ths reports were adopted.
