AUCKLAND SAVINGS

A return of tlie Gwenmient Savings Bank deposits, which has been presented to Parliament, by not taking into account private savings banks in Auckland and Dunedin, left room for an inferenco that: tlie people of those two citie:. Avero less thrifty, than those of Wellington and Christchurch. The Hon. T. Thompson. (Auckland) Avarmly defended Auckland from such an imputation in the Council to-day, and, moved for a return of the deposits in both the Auckland Savings' Banks! This "was objected to by the Hon. J. E. Jenkinson (Otago), avlio could not see why details of a privates concern should be required by the Council. The Hon. J. Bigg (Wellington) suggested-that Mr Thompson was too sensitive about the reputation of Auckland. He had heard it said that Wellington Harboiir was more beautiful than that of Auckland, and ho- would like Mr Thompson to ask also in. hh return for maps of both harbours that would assist members to judge between them. (Laughter.) Dr. Findlay suggested tlu.t if returns were asked for by Auckland members on all questions which they considered matters ot rivalry with Wellington, the Gov-exn-ment Printing Office might be-put to great expense. Mr Thompson said Ire Avould withdraw his motion, since the position in regard to Auckland had been made clear by the explanation which ho had given in moving it.
