EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
THE SCHOOL SYLLABUS
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, January 5
The school syllabus came under review at the Educational Institute Conference to-day. Mr. McKenzie, of Auckland, said that teachers in his district felt that the syllabus was too indefinite and gave too much power to inspectors, who were apt to bully some of the younger teachers in the smaller schools. This allegation was deprecated by Mr. Valentine, of South Canterbury. Ultimately a committee was appointed to draw up a report on the syllabus.
A motion was carried that any extension of the school day beyond five hours was inexpedient.
Motions were carried: —
"That inspectors should be under the control of the Education Department."
. "That the age of exemption be 15 years, not 14 years."
"That the standard exemption be the 6th standard."
