Justices Alverston, Darling, and Bucknill refused to issue a summons against Mr Gladstone, Home Secretary, for assaulting Laura Ainsworth by ordering her to be forcibly fed. The Court, however, directed the Birmingham Stipendiary Magistrate to grant a summons against the governor and the doctor of the gaol, in order that the facts might be investigated.
