OTAKI MAORI COLLEGE.

WELLINGTON, October 5. Th« Maori College was opened by the Governor at Otaki yesterday. Owing to the iimiteri number of invitations, the Maoris did not attend, but held a gathing afterwards.

A short service in the open air was conducted by Bishop Wallis, after which th© Governor formally declared the buildings open for the training of Maoris "in all such timings as make for their well-being in body, soul, and spirit."

The Native Minister telegraphed his appreciation of this fresh step in advance in the education of the Maori youth and hoped the college would prove a powerful factor in training up students >vho would prove worthy and able citizens of the Dominion.

The lion Geo. Fowlds, Minister of Education, also sent an apology for absence, and best wishes.

Speeches were made by the Governor, Bishop Wallis and Mr Field, M.P.
