CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

ASHBURTON, August 27. Several cases of alleged cruelty to horses were heard before Mr. V. G. 'Day S.M., to-day. The police prosecuted in each case, W. H. Zouch, Christchurch. inspector for the Society1 for the Prevention of Cruelty ■ to 'Animals, Being the chief witness. Fines were inflicted in every case, save one, as follows:— Stephen Ryan' £5, Henry Vestenskoe ™. Alexander Knox. Preddeclice 20s, John McLauchlan 40s, with costs against each defendant. The charge against John Johnston, of workma horses while suffering from sores, was dismissed, it having been shown by him that he had no knowledge of the cdn-' dition of the animals. ' ;
