THIRTY ENGINES TO BE BUILT.
CHRISTCHURCH, July 5
The Hon. Mr Millar informed a deputation of local members of Parliament that it was intended to build 30 engines in eighteen months in the Dominion. Ten W. F. engines would be built at Hillside, ten B's at Addington, and tenders would be called for ten. As the work would be put in hand as soon as the material was available. If the tenders for ten A's were not satisfactory the workshops would be given a chance.
On the general question of the unemployed, the Minister ..said that the Government had found work for 700 men at bushfelling and railway works. The insurance risks were covered by the Government. The men got their'tents free, and could pay for tools, cooking utensils, etc., out of their wages. The work whs let by contract at from 25s to 35s an acre. There were 10,000 acres to be cleared, which would be snapped up the moment it was cleared. ] If the bushfelling and railways did riot take all the men there was a ten-mile road to be made, which would assist more of the helpless.
