The Hon. T. MacKenzie,. Minister of Agriculture, left Wellington for Auckland by the Main Trunk train yesterday.
Constable Cullen, who is succeeding Mounted-Constable Sweeney (promoted to Acting Detective at Auckland)/ haa arrived here from Hawera.
.The Rev A. Whyte, of Havelock North, has been nominated, it is understood, for tho vacant Presbyterian professorship in Dunedin. .Mr Why to is the second New Zealander whose name lifts been mentioned in collection with tho chair.
A movement is afoot among tho Presbyterian community in Picton tosolicit funds for the purpose of erecting a memorial to the memory of the Tatc Rev R. J. Allsworth, who came, "to tho colony in 1861. and gave 40 years of an earnest' and. strenuous life to ediica^ tional and religious work in New Zealand. Sixteen years of this long colonial life he spent in Picton. ' The Rev AHs^ yorth was well known in Wanganui and it was here he passed away. A Napier wire aays that the Very Rev. Dr. -Kennedy, who is leaving;'St^ Mary's Seholasticate, Meanee, to take \ip the rectorship of St. Patrick' s_ College, Wellington, has received presentations from the parishioners and others testifying to the esteem he has won during his i 6 years' residence in"'the! district.
Miss Mary Ferguson, who has beeii associated with the staff of the Gonvill0 ( school for some time, left by tne Alain' Trunk express yesterday en roitte for" Tauranga. In connection with her departure, a very pleasing little function took place in the Gonville Hall at 11.30 jipsterday imiming, when Miss Fcirgusoii" was presented with a handsome set, "co'najstiifg. of a sHyer-movinted hair brush, conrbl and mirror, and a pair of silver-mounted tmiclling salts , bottles. Tho presentat fon waa made by Mr Kime on behalf of the Gonville JSchpoj children. Mr J. W. Baker made a short spooch, and also responded for Miss Ferguson. Tho children sang.a song, and tho function was brought"to a close by the singing Of the National Anthem..
