! (Per Press, Association). j CHRISTCHURCH, June 30. : Tho Mayor told 20 men to day that nothing further could ha done tJI the City Council met again. Speaking'to a reporter, he said that many residents would give gardening work but, fearing the consequence under the 'Workers' Compensation Act, preferred to give their work to a eon- , tractor, who took all tho ri&ks. I Mr Dob>on, City Surveyor, says that most of the men now on relief work are worth 83 per day. The nien are employed for a week, and then give place to others. Tims employment is given to a greater number of men. 211 men are on the Council's lists. There are 50 employed every week, so that it is four weeks before the firstemployed men go on again. Fifteen men are expected to leave tomorro.v morning for the Midland railway works between the Cass and the Bealey. The party will be joined by a small party from Timam and about ten men from - Ashburton.Another party for a bushfelling contract in the North Island is expected to be displatched to-morrow evening, and if the men are available other parties will be made up next week.
