In the meantime the most strenuous efforts are being made to induce the authorities to abandon their investigation of the affair. It is stated that the lawyers, whose offer of £20,000 for the suppression of the case was rejected by Mr. Loeb, the. chief collector of the port of New York, have approach, ed him again, this time offering no less than £52,000 as duty and penalty, oii condition that the goods which have been seized be given up and all proceedings The lawyers who have made"this offer declare, that they are completely unaware of the identity of the smugglers, and have reason to believe there are two or three persons acting between themselves and the actual delinquents.
