A SHOCKING OCCURRENCE.
A WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH
(Per Press Association.)
NAPIER, June 18. Information was received by the police at Hastings to-day that the school residence at Porangahau was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday night and Mrs. H. Rdbson, aged about 25 years, wife of the schoolmaster, perished in' the flames. It appears that Mrs. Robson, feeling tired, retired to bed and her husband said. he would go arid do some work in his workshop, situated about 40.yards to the rear of the dwelling. Shortly afterwards the inmates of the Porangahau Hotel saw, the house in flames and gave the alarm. Mr. Robson was then unaware of the fire. The house .was burning furiously. A man named Sutton rushed to the front window and was just in time to rescue a boy—about three years of qige— the only child of the. deceased. To enter the house was impossible. The room occupied by Mrs. Robson was in the front of the house,, and it was in that room that the fire originated. It is sfurmise.d that the fire was caused by a lighted candle coming in contact with a i window curtain, and that Mrs. Robsoit, who was in a delicate .state of health^ fainted before she was able to give an alarm. Deceased . was a sister of Miss Driscoll, postmistress at Havelock North.
