WELLINGTON ABATTOIR LOAN.

; WELLINGTON June 17. v T^ie'question of the afettwf's loari came before the City Council again "tonight. At the last meeting the new IVtayor, Dr Newman, made a statement on the city finances, in wh}ch he said the ' loan of £15,000 raised for .abattoirs had been used for other purposes. The following day the.City. Treasurer made a! statement:to the prte& which contradicted Dr Newman's interpretation'of the transaction. At the meeting to-night a letter; was read from ihe Treasui-er admitting that the Mayor's view of the matter was correct and apologising; for having made a statement to the contrary. In v'ew of the Treasurer's long service the Council def cided to take no further action. Tli£ position now is that £4800 of the abattoir's loan has been paid back and £10.200 has to come from the district fund in order to put the loan account: in a proper state. • • . ■ ■ >■
