THE FUTURE OF FLAX

The Manawatu "Daily Times" states that at a meeting of directors, of the A. and L. Seifert, Flex-dressing Co., Ltd., the owners of the world's biggest flax milling plant, at Makerua, has, after considering the-whole situation, decided, to. send Mr. Alfred managing director, to the Phillipine Islands to investigate the ' conditions of the Manila hemp industry, also to Mexico, and Yucatan to investigate the sisal industry, which, within the last few years,, has assumed immense proportions, The Company . has decided to adopt tliis course'on- account of the 'veryunsatisfactory state of the flax-millirig industry. The price is low yet. The quantity- of sisal, and Manila produced seems to be on the increase. Last, week, according, to the Agent-General's, cable, the shipment of, Manila, was 39,000 bales —a record. The result of ,Mr. Seifert's investigation will decide whether it is worth while * persevering iri: this '"industry. The position, as far as' tlie millers are concerned, is, we are informed, qttite clear. The cost\ of production' is 're-. gulated ,by the Arbitration "Cdurt^*" arid the • land and'- iridUstrTy? .•."are ?subjecii to taxation which the millers' regard as an unjust handicap; So, if Manila; and sisal can be produced at a "profit at the present prices, or lower, it will be. jiecessary to consider \whether it is worth while continuing in the:: flax industry".'
