TAIHAPE NOTES.
(From -Our Own Correspondent.)
On Sunday evening Canon Eccles, ot Woodville, took the service at St. Margaret's Church, and during the course of a very fine sermon the l'everend gentleman said that, he-regretted exceedingly to .find that Taihape was not yet out' of the stages, in ;a town's progress when the desecration of the Sabbath was allowed by the authorities. It does seem a great pity that this sort of thing is allowed to exist. The recreation reserve is right in the middle, of the town, and on every Sunday afternoon, the yella "of footballers accompany the hymn of the Salvation Army. The Army is the only body"who is making any attempt to suppress Sunday desecration, and it has recently adapted a site opSosite the recreation gates for its Sunay afternoon services. /
The farmers on the Papakai Road Settlement, and those of the Wainui district, are laying private telephone wires to connect themselves with the. local telephone exchange. Much credit is due to these sturdy toilers of the soil for their determination to end their isolation, and become in this respect the equal of those who are living in the town.
It is understood that a new butchery business will commence operation in Tai-' hape on the Ist July, making three of that class of business in the town. The proprietors will be Reid' and Casey, both local gentlemen, and premises are being erected'for them by Mr. Bennett on his section next to Morgan and Co.'s premises. It was with the greatest pleasure that wo all read the news that the Wanganui Hospital Board had at last consented to go on with the establishment pf a cottage hospital for Taihape, and it is to be hoped that the feeling of opposition will be entirely removed, and that those members of the Board who have been oppointed as a sub-committee to deal with the matter will join with the local committee to make the very best -of the capital at their disposal. Some dissatisfaction has been, expressed here at the selection of the committee from this end, it being considered that the Chamber of Commerce, who has had tho work in hand up to the present, should have been consulted with reference to the personnel of the committee.
