ESSAY ON TRAFALGAR DAY.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. Major Hobday, President,; of the Christchurch branch o|*"tKe^ayy League, has sent the" following^ circular letter to the headmasters-of-'-schools':—• Dear Sir,—The Navy League are prepared to offer prizes to secondary schools and district high schools of the province of- for boys and' girls (a) j over 16, (b) under 16, on Trafalgar Day i of this year; 1909, for an. essay. # to; be written and sent any time riot* laterV than a month before Trafalgar Day, to the secretary of the Navy. League. The essay is to be'written during school time, in a period of not more than one hour under the supervision of a teacher and without the 'aid of a,ny notes or books at the Jtime of writing*. The school authorities are to select the two befit essays in each group particular school and forward them to; the of the Navy League, for final adjudication. Two prizes will be given in each grbup. Group A—First i>rize books to the va'ltie of two guineas, second prize books to the value; of - one guinea. .Group B—First prize, bodies to the value of orie guineai second prize books to the value of 15s. The subjects are:—Group A—-%How can the British Empire, outside the United Kingdom; co-operate most effectually with'the British' Navy?" Group B—"The expansion of the British Empire in the reign of Queen Victoria, with special reference to the part played by the British navy.''
