500 OUT OF WORK IN CHRIST-
CHURCH

CHRISTCHURCH, June 10. A conference of delegates of the local bodies in the Christchurch district was held to-day, and discussed matters connected with finding work for the workless. ■-••■ . - . •
The Mayor of Chritschurch presided. He stated that no reply had been received from the Prime Minister to his telegram asking if the' Government would subsidise pound for pound works started by local authorities for the purpose of absorbing the unemployed. It was decided to further communicate with Sir Joseph Ward by telegraph, and adjourn the conference till a reply was received. Mr L. R. Wilson, secretary of the ' Unemployed Committee, stated that he had the names of 208 workless men on his list. Of these one hundred • were married with families ranging from one child to fourteen. In "the last mentioned case five children were earning something. He declared that there were at least 500 men in Christchurch out of work. The opinion was expressed by the delegates that theVGeneral Labourers' Union should issue permits to incompetent men to enable them to work for 7s a day, and one speaker advocated that this, rate be . paid all round in order not to ..attract unemployed from other parts.
